paraphrasing vs rewriting — they're not the same thing
paraai team-

there's a reason cheap paraphrasers don't fool anyone anymore.

try it yourself. take a paragraph from chatgpt, run it through quillbot or one of the free tools, and then put the result into gptzero. still flagged. maybe the score drops a little, but it's obvious something's off.

the problem is what these tools actually do.

synonym swapping is a dead end

most paraphrasers work at the word level. they find words and replace them with alternatives. "utilize" becomes "use." "demonstrate" becomes "show." maybe they rearrange a clause here and there.

the sentence structure stays the same. the rhythm stays the same. the overall pattern — which is what detectors actually measure — barely changes.

it's like putting a hat on a robot and calling it a disguise.

rewriting is different

real rewriting means understanding what a sentence says and then saying it a completely different way. not swapping parts. rebuilding from scratch.

a paraphraser takes "the study demonstrated significant improvements in patient outcomes" and gives you "the research showed major enhancements in patient results." same structure, different words. detector doesn't care.

a rewriter might give you "patients did noticeably better — the data was pretty clear on that." different structure. different tone. different rhythm. that's what changes the detector score.

why this matters

ai detectors have gotten good at catching synonym swaps. they've been trained on exactly that pattern. you can't out-synonym-swap a model that's seen millions of synonym-swapped texts.

what still works is genuine structural variation. changing sentence length. mixing up formality. breaking long sentences into short ones and vice versa. adding the kind of imperfect, slightly messy quality that human writing has.

this is what we focused on with paraai's paraphrase tool. it reads the full passage, gets the meaning, and rebuilds the text with real structural variety. it's slower than synonym swapping but it actually works.

quick test you can run

take any ai-generated paragraph. run it through a basic paraphraser and then through paraai. put both results into gptzero or originality.ai.

the difference is usually obvious. one still reads like ai with a thesaurus. the other reads like a person wrote it.
