why ai detectors flag human-written text (and what to do about it)

a professor runs your essay through turnitin's ai detector. it comes back 45% ai-generated. you wrote every word yourself. now what?

this happens more than people think. and it's getting worse.

why false positives happen

ai detectors work on probability. they look at your text and ask "how likely is it that an ai model would generate these exact word sequences?" if the answer is "pretty likely," you get flagged.

the problem? humans write predictably too. especially in certain contexts.

academic writing is formulaic on purpose. you're taught to write clearly, use standard terminology, and follow a specific structure. introduction, literature review, methods, results, discussion. that's predictable by design. detectors read that predictability as ai.

non-native speakers get hit hardest. when english isn't your first language, you tend to use common words and simple structures. makes total sense — you go with what you know works. but that's exactly what low perplexity looks like to a detector.

technical and scientific writing looks robotic. try writing a methods section that doesn't sound formulaic. "participants were recruited from..." "data was analyzed using..." it's supposed to sound like that.

the numbers are rough

originality.ai claims 99% accuracy. gptzero says 98%. sounds good on paper.

but 1-2% false positive rate across millions of submissions is a lot of people getting wrongly accused. some universities have reported professors flagging papers that were clearly human-written — handwritten drafts, in-class essays, the works.

one study out of stanford found that detectors were significantly more likely to flag writing by non-native english speakers. the accuracy dropped to around 60% for that group. that's basically a coin flip.

what you can actually do

if you wrote it yourself and got flagged, the frustrating answer is: you probably need to prove it.

keep your drafts. use google docs or a tool that tracks version history. if you can show the progression from outline to rough draft to final version, that's strong evidence.
